Researchers from the University of Murcia have developed WiSea, an innovative digital decision-support system designed to strengthen traditional Mediterranean fisheries while improving sustainability. The study, published in Marine Policy, focused on the last Spanish Mediterranean Almadraba fisheries in La Azohía and Águilas, combines underwater monitoring technologies with the traditional knowledge of artisanal fishers to optimise catches, reduce dolphin-related net interactions, and improve operational efficiency.
The publication reflects the objectives of the 2B-BLUE Project by demonstrating how digital innovation can reinforce traditional sectors and support a sustainable Blue Economy across Mediterranean countries. Through collaboration between scientists, fishers, and local institutions, the project highlights the importance of inclusive technological transformation that preserves cultural heritage while enhancing environmental and socio-economic resilience in coastal communities.
