Strengthening collaboration between 2B-BLUE researchers in sustainable marine biotechnology

As part of the 2B-BLUE project’s Knowledge Transfer Framework, Dr. Jesús Argente and Amelia Canovas from the Intelligent Systems and Telematics Research Group at the University of Murcia welcomed Luen Zidar from the National Institute of Biology for a technical visit held from May 10 to 15, 2026.

During her stay in Murcia, Ms. Zidar visited the university’s facilities at the Espinardo Campus, as well as the Veterinary Anatomical Museum, which features a large collection of marine mammals, fish and other biological specimens.

Ms. Zidar, a biotechnologist working on the extraction of chitin from marine sources, also attended the 15th Conference of the European Chitin Society (EUCHIS 2026). This conference is regarded as Europe’s leading events dedicated to research and innovation in the field of chitin and chitosan. These are two natural polymeric compounds with outstanding potential and a wide range of innovative applications in agriculture, functional food and food packaging, feed, biotechnology, water, biomedicine, pharmaceutics, aquaculture, dentistry, cosmetics, advanced materials, textiles, energy, environment and other fields.

The visit created an opportunity for researchers from UMU and NIB to share knowledge and discuss future collaboration. Their discussions focused on finding sustainable ways to use marine by-products and develop new environmentally friendly solutions for the blue economy.
