Workshops Highlight Growing Support for Blue Biotechnology in Albania
A series of awareness workshops organized by the Albanian Center for Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development (ACEPSD) through the 2B-BLUE project has revealed growing interest in blue biotechnology and the blue economy across Albania. The events brought together representatives from public institutions, universities, businesses and civil society to explore opportunities for sustainable development based on marine resources.
Participants identified aquaculture, fisheries and Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) as sectors with strong potential for future growth. They also recognized Albania’s coastline and rich marine biodiversity as valuable assets for developing innovative blue biotechnology solutions. The workshops also highlighted challenges, including limited funding, research capacity and collaboration between sectors. Participants emphasized the need for training, stronger partnerships and greater support for innovation.
Overall, the workshops successfully increased awareness, encouraged stakeholder engagement and generated practical recommendations for future policies and initiatives, demonstrating Albania’s strong potential to build a more sustainable and competitive blue economy.
