Study visit showcases innovative sustainable aquaculture in Italy
Albanian partners ACEPSD and CNR-IRBIM, together with demonstration site operator Alb-Adriatico 2013, all members of the 2B-BLUE project, visited the regenerative Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) pilot facility developed within the BIOBASED project at the University of Foggia in March 2026. The visit gave participants the opportunity to exchange knowledge and explore innovative approaches to sustainable aquaculture. The visit showcased how commercially valuable macroalgae can be cultivated alongside mussels and oysters, creating a system that recycles nutrients, improves environmental performance and supports more sustainable food production. Participants gained practical experience through technical presentations, guided tours and discussions with experts. The visit also highlighted key recommendations for adapting IMTA systems to different coastal environments, including the importance of environmental monitoring, collaboration and knowledge sharing. The study visit strengthened cooperation among project partners and supported the transfer of innovative aquaculture solutions that can help build a more resilient and sustainable blue economy across the Mediterranean.
