Advancing Blue Biotechnology and Sustainable Aquaculture in Albania
On April 28, the second 2B-BLUE Awareness Campaign Workshop, held at the University Luigj Gurakuqi, brought together representatives from academia, NGOs and the fisheries sector in the Shkodër region. The event aimed to promote blue biotechnology and encourage dialogue on sustainable blue economy practices in Albania and across the Mediterranean.
Opening remarks from the Albanian Center for Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development (ACEPSD) and the host university highlighted the importance of collaboration between research institutions and civil society. A presentation from ACEPSD emphasized its role in the 2B-BLUE project, including efforts to pilot innovative solutions in the Bay of Vlora.
A central focus of the workshop was the implementation of Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA), a sustainable model that combines species, such as seabream, seabass, mussels, oysters and sea cucumbers to improve efficiency while reducing environmental impact. The Albanian pilot demonstrated how this approach can enhance both ecological and economic outcomes.
Participants were also introduced to a key 2B-BLUE report on blue economy development in Albania, as well as the ADRISMART project, which promotes smart aquaculture through innovation and cross-border cooperation.
The workshop concluded with an interactive roundtable, fostering dialogue on climate challenges, sustainable aquaculture and future opportunities for the region.
