Cattolica (Italy), March 17-18, 2025. BIO-BASED: Seaweed and aquaculture waste recycling in the Adriatic
CNR IRBIM took part in the second meeting of the Steering Committee and Project Meeting BIO-BASED project, held in Cattolica on March 17-18, 2025. Funded by the Interreg Italy-Croatia Programme, the project focuses on developing blue biorefineries in the Adriatic Sea. The goal is to turn seaweed and aquaculture waste into useful, eco-friendly products for the bioeconomy, like animal feed or other valuable materials. During the meeting, participants discussed ways to create high-value products from leftover materials in aquaculture.
CNR’s participation also helped strengthen synergies with the 2B-BLUE project, as both projects share similar goals—promoting blue biotechnology and the sustainable use of marine resources in the Mediterranean. Insights from BIO-BASED, especially around eco-friendly aquaculture and biorefinery methods, will help improve pilot projects and partnerships within Italy’s Blue Biotechnology Hub.
