10/04/2026
Strengthening IMTA cooperation between Greece and Slovenia

As part of the regular exchanges among partners of the 2B-BLUE project, a study visit took place in Piran, Slovenia, on March 26–27, 2026, bringing together partners from the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR), the National Institute of Biology (NIB), and the University of Murcia (UMU). The visit focused on strengthening collaboration between the Greek and Slovenian Demonstration Sites, in line with project activities on knowledge transfer.

The main goal was to share practical experience in Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA), especially the co-cultivation of shellfish and sea cucumbers. NIB also showcased its marine biotechnology work, opening discussions on future collaboration opportunities.

On the first day, participants visited the Sečovlje Saltpans Nature Reserve, where they explored microalgae resources and their potential uses in biotechnology. The group also toured NIB’s pilot facilities for sea cucumber cultivation. The second day was dedicated to presentations at the Marine Biology Station Piran (MBP), where NIB introduced its research activities and Demonstration Sites, followed by a visit to its laboratories.

This first exchange between HCMR and NIB provided a valuable opportunity to share knowledge and align approaches. A return visit to Greece is planned for April 2026. Overall, the visit helped strengthen partnerships and set the stage for future joint work across the Mediterranean.
