Blue Biotechnology in Action: CTN Supports Cleaner Mediterranean Ports
Innovation in the blue economy thrives on collaboration. Within the 2B-BLUE initiative, the Centro Tecnológico Naval y del Mar (CTN) plays a key role in connecting research, technology and real environmental needs across the Mediterranean.
One example is BIOREMED ALGAE, an innovative solution being tested in the Port of Alicante. The system uses macroalgae to naturally absorb excess nutrients, improve water clarity and help manage CO₂ in port waters. Designed as a modular system, it can be adapted to different port environments and needs.
While CTN did not develop the technology, it actively supports its testing, visibility, and potential expansion through European cooperation projects. By bringing together port authorities, researchers, companies and public institutions, CTN helps promising solutions gain credibility and reach new markets.
A key strength of BIOREMED ALGAE is its circular economy approach. The algae used to clean the water produce biomass that can later be used commercially, combining environmental benefits with economic opportunity.
Through 2B-BLUE, CTN continues to promote sustainable maritime innovation by sharing knowledge, supporting pilot projects, and encouraging collaboration. Together, these efforts are helping Mediterranean ports move toward cleaner waters and a more sustainable blue economy.
