Demo Site in Alicante Port

15/01/2025

Alicante, January 15, 2025. The 2B-BLUE initiative and the Demo Site in Alicante Port were spotlighted during the workshop “Spain and the Region of Murcia Leading Sustainable Water Management in the Mediterranean”, organized by the Region of Murcia and Interreg NEXT MED on January 14.

The Demo Site project, entitled “Bioremediation of Water with Macroalgae and New Technologies Promoting the Circular Economy and Facilitating Climate Change Mitigation: pilot case in the port of Alicante”, is set to be implemented throughout 2025 through a collaboration between the University of MurciaCTN (partners of 2B-BLUE), Mediterranean Algae, and the Port of Alicante.
This innovative initiative combines two cutting-edge solutions and good practices identified in the projects:
  • BIOREMED ALGAE, a bioremediation technology that uses macroalgae to purify polluted waters, removing heavy metals and excess nutrients while creating valuable biomass for products like cosmetics and nutraceuticals.
  • TOKENCO2, a blockchain-based tool leveraging robotic process automation (RPA) to monitor, measure, and offset the carbon footprint of maritime activities such as fishing or aquaculture.
Together, these solutions will enhance water quality, promote the circular economy and mitigate climate change impacts. The Demo Site serves as a scalable model for sustainable practices in ports, aquaculture, and water purification, both across the Mediterranean and globally.
