Chania, Crete, Greece. June 15-19, 2025. 2B-BLUE Partners Highlight Marine Bioremediation Innovation at European Conference in Crete

At the 9th European Bioremediation Conference (EBC-IX) in Chania, Crete, 2B-BLUE project partners showcased national pilot projects advancing marine biotechnology and the Mediterranean bioeconomy. Dr. Jesús Argente-García (University of Murcia) presented a pilot using macroalgae to clean port waters in Alicante, Spain. The study also integrates carbon footprint tokenization, linking marine bioremediation with digital sustainability tools. Chrysa Efstratiou (Hellenic Centre for Marine Research) highlighted integrated mussel–sea cucumber farming in Greece, a nature-based approach to sediment restoration and biomass production. These initiatives, featured in sessions on Phytoremediation and Circular Economy, illustrate the promise of marine-based, sustainable solutions for ecosystem restoration.

Now in its 24th year, EBC brings together experts to share advances in pollution remediation and bio-based innovation. The strong interest in 2B-BLUE contributions reflects their value in addressing environmental challenges while supporting coastal resilience and blue growth.
